Op 1 juni 2026 zou Marilyn Monroe 100 jaar geworden zijn.
Het boek Movie Icons: Monroe (2006) maakt deel uit van de onvolprezen reeks 'Movie Icons' waarin uitgeverij Taschen beroemde filmsterren presenteert in een compact en rijk geïllustreerd formaat.
Deze drietalige Engels-Duits-Franse uitgave is een visuele biografie, eerder dan een uitvoerige wetenschappelijke biografie. De nadruk ligt op het beeld van Monroe als Hollywood-icoon. Naast de foto's bevat het een beknopt essay, een chronologie van haar leven, een overzicht van al haar films en een bibliografie.
De auteur toont het spanningsveld tussen de publieke figuur Marilyn Monroe en de vrouw erachter, Norma Jean Mortenson. Hij benadrukt dat Monroe niet alleen een sekssymbool was, maar ook een intelligente en ambitieuze vrouw die haar eigen mythe vormgaf.
